The Bark Borer Beetle: (Ernobius mollis)
Identification:
The Waney Edge Borer attacks the sapwood of seasoned and partially seasoned softwoods.

Damage characteristics:

Bore Dust:
Any holes are about 15 mm (max) of the barked edge. Most emergence holes are through bark if present. Plenty of frass if bark is still on sample - frass is 'bun' shaped and there are dark and light pellets -feels -'gritty'. Buns smaller than Death watch frass.

Looks very like furniture beetle at first sight but note: all the damage is along the barked edge (waney edge). Most damage is to the bark. Any damage to the wood itself is very superficial in the sapwood; it just looks 'scored'. Holes are round and 2 mm diameter.
