The fruiting body of this fungus forms a small fleshy cup up 50 mm across. It is generally pale buff colour on the upper side and white on the underside.
The shape will to some extent depend on the species; some are like a rather large 'pasta shell'. When it dries out it shrinks and becomes very hard and brittle.
The
fungus may be found growing from almost any substrate including plaster, brick,
carpet, mortar. The presence of the growth indicates very wet conditions.
Whilst the organism does not attack wood, where it is present, the substrate
will be very damp and any timber in contact with such dampness will be at
risk of decay.
